Quality and Inclusive Education

Quality and Inclusive Education

Education is a prerequisite to national development. Seen in this light, education is an indispensable means of unlocking and protecting human rights since it provides the environment required for securing good health, liberty, security, economic well-being, and participation in social and political activities. In realizing this right, KAIH advocates for the following:

  • Inclusion of PWIDS in free and compulsory primary and secondary education;
  • Access to an inclusive, quality and free primary education and secondary education on an equal basis;
  • Provision of reasonable accommodation according to  individual’s support needs;
  • Access  to tertiary education, vocational training, adult education and lifelong learning without discrimination.

Furthermore, the Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2005 by the Kenyan government underscores the importance of inclusive education as human capital development that empowers learners with disabilities who are likely to be marginalized to participate in mainstream education sector. The Inclusive education is based on the principle that all children should learn together, wherever possible, regardless of the existing difference. The aim is to combat discriminatory attitudes by acknowledging that every child has unique characteristics, interests, abilities and learning needs and that the learners with intellectual disabilities must have access to and be reasonably accommodated in the education system.
